WILLY VLAUTIN speaks for the dispossessed, the down-at-heel and out-of- luck in America. In particular he is a voice for the discarded and disempowered young. While his view of their lives is of a bleak cycle of poverty, victimisation, aimlessness, abuse and petty crime, underneath this almost crushing weight there is hope. It may only be a tiny spark but it exists and it is that flicker that keeps them going.
